Alicja Bielawska, Jeśli nie tutaj, gdzie?

Alicja Bielawska (born in 1980 in Warsaw) majored in Art History at the University of Warsaw (2005) and Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (2009). She has received scholarships from the Polish Ministry of Culture (2012), Startstipendium Mondriaan Fonds (2012-2013), Young Poland (2014), Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart (2014-2015). A. Bielawska participated in European Exchange Academy Beelitz, Germany (2008) and Nida Art Colony, Lithuania (2016). In 2015, Bielawska was nominated to the VIEWS – Deutsche Bank Art Prize, and in 2016, she was nominated to the Paszporty Polityki award in the visual arts category.

She creates drawings and sculptures, for which she uses such materials as textiles, metal, wood, and ceramics. Her works concentrate on the material aspects of the life – everyday life, and the relations between objects, interiors and memories. The artist tracks down the boundaries between art and design, and tackles questions on the relativity of perception and remembering. In 2013 she designed curtains for the auditorium space of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Warsaw, in the former Emilia pavilion. She also introduces elements of choreography and performance into her works. In 2016 she cooperated with the Lithuanian dancer Kristina Aglaja Skaldina and completed training course in experimental choreography at Centrum w Ruchu, Warsaw.

She had her solo shows in numerous galleries, among others: There are no fixed points in space, Starter Gallery, Warsaw (2016); Soft Ground,  Sodu 4, Vilnius (2016); Mufka na trapezie, Starter Gallery, Warsaw (2014); When Things Find Their Place, BWA, Zielona Góra (2013); Adopted Shapes, Galeria Arsenał, Białystok (2012), The Revolutions of Things, Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, 2010; – I feel that I’ve forgotten something. – I think you remember too much., Czarna Gallery, Warsaw (2010).

She has exhibited, among others, at the Zachęta — National Gallery of Art and the Center for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, BWA Zielona Góra, Arsenał Gallery in Białystok, at Galeria Labirynt in Lublin, and BWA Gallery in Katowice.

Since 2014, together with Ulla Eriksen and Morten Ernlund, she has co-created an artistic collective called Situations, and since 2016 she has been part of an artistic group called Under a Site-specific Influence, with Mette Borup, Ulla Eriksen and Maria Michailidou.

At the If not here, where? exhibition, the artist presents works executed especially for Galeria Labirynt, but also her older works which gain a new dimension when introduced into another context. (More about the exhibition)
