About the collection:

The beginnings of the Galeria Labirynt collection reach the 1960s. Its characteristic shape should be owed to Andrzej Mroczek who in the years 1981-2009 was the director of the Bureau for Art Exhibitions (Biuro Wystaw Artystycznych). The collection was born in times of intensive search for answers to questions concerning state and condition of art. The aim of art was to look for the limits and to test the reality by means of language and the use of new media (photography, film, video). The art functioned within the linguistic, conceptual and interpretational context. The BWA Galeria Labirynt was documenting these facts. Particularly important to the programme of the Galeria and the Collection were works of artists related to intellectual trend – conceptual art, performance art, photomedia, film, video, contextual art, land art, visual poetry, geometric abstraction.

Galeria Labirynt’s value is to preserve essential works of the Neo-Avant-garde heritage without which the artistic expressions of artists from the decades-to-come, also the youngest generation of artists, would not be possible. The collection is represented by the works of the most prominent contemporary Polish artists and is being regularly enlarged and completed with the works that realise the programme of the Galeria Labirynt.
