Janusz Grabiański (1929–1976) was a painter, graphic artist, author of illustrations in books for children and adults; he presented readers with a very personal and timeless visions of the world, which in the sensitive eyes of the beholders is still alive and gaining new colours. Impressive output of the artist’s short life, which primarily consists of watercolour pieces, is invariably delightful to the viewers due to its perfect execution, freshness and richness of the vivid colours.

Grabiński’s output has become part of the cannon of the Polish school of illustration. He was appreciated and awarded in Poland and cooperated with publishing houses in Austria and the USA, among others. His fine brushstrokes brought to life the unforgettable Rudzia, Rogaś, a sick kitten, little orphan Mary and the gnomes, the characters from the Marian Falski’s Elementarz, and a whole gallery of great dynamic animals and plants.

At the exhibition at Galeria Labirynt | Plaza, thanks to the courtesy of the widow after the artists, Joanna Grabiańska, we present a collection which has not been shown before: the complete original pieces of illustration for Selma Lagerlöf’s Wonderful Adventures of Nils Holgersson and the paste-ups for post stamps and posters.

Curator: Krystyna Rybicka, Ph.D.
