Agricultural land for lease. In search of art wastelands – informational meeting

A garden next to the gallery? Why not?! Within the project of Elżbieta Jabłońska ‘Agricultural land for lease. In search of art wastelands’ green areas, lawns, pieces of land near public art institutions, galleries and museums are made available free of charge to all who would like to cultivate the land. Seasonal vegetables, flowers, field and ornamental plants – everyone can choose whatever he likes.

Lease of the land belonging to a gallery or a museum preceded by its partial revitalisation may begin the creation of a new common area. Its shape would depend on the city residents, neighbours of the institutions or on the public.

Free of charge lease of agricultural beds will commence upon signing a specially prepared agreement defining the terms and conditions of land use. Thanks to the promotion of the idea in a number of cities this local initiative may become a phenomenon on a national scale. In order to establish contact between project participants and leaseholders a special website will be set up. It will become a platform where latest information concerning the project and a place, character of works and current advice based on a gardeners’ calendar will be posted. The website will also enable an exchange of knowledge, experiences, photographic documentation of works and a description of current activities. The following institutions take part in the project: Zielona Góra Bureau for Art Exhibitions (BWA), Arsenał Gallery in Białystok, Warsaw Królikarnia, Bureau for Art Exhibitions (BWA) in Tarnów, Museum of Art (MS) in Łódź , Wyspa Institute of Art, Gdańsk, Olsztyn Bureau for Art Exhibitions (BWA), Labirynt Gallery in Lublin, Wrocław Contemporary Museum.

The project is an attempt to reinterpret trends in Polish contemporary art related to land cultivation (Julita Wójcik, Kwiatuchi duo) and redefine the idea of sowing (Teresa Murak) as well as it will try to formulate a new definition of the rules of social participation in art area.

Everyone interested in participating in the project (adolescents, adults, the elderly, families with children) is cordially invited to take part in an informational meeting to be held in Labirynt Gallery on Tuesday, 15 April 2014 at 5 p.m. The land for a free of charge lease is located at ks. J. Popiełuszki 5 Street in Lublin (next to Labirynt Gallery).

The project is realised with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage
