Open Group – Biography

Galeria Labirynt and Open Group would like to invite you to participate in “Biography” project, another artistic residence within Meet the Neighbours.

Venue: Market at ul. Wileńska.

Exhibition on view: 20/01-07/02/2020, Monday-Saturday 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (performance 2:00-5:00 p.m.).

Opening: 25/01/2020 at 2:00 p.m.

“Biography” is the result of cooperation between Open Group and Yuriy Sokolov, an artist from Lviv who joined the group in 2014 – just before work on the project started.

The project itself is a long-lasting performance consisting of several parts. Its purpose is to reveal the meaning of the phenomenon of biography one more time. The basic intention of “Biography” is to involve viewers in the work. The performance begins with a letter from Yuriy Sokolov, in which he encourages viewers to share their biographies for the needs of the project. In his letter, Yuriy Sokolov quotes an excerpt from a text by Daniil Charms, whose punch line is that “a man is a part of the world”. Over five hundred participants have joined Open Group during the previous four editions of the project.

Anyone can join the project. The only requirement is to write a biography. All gathered materials are to be stored in open access in an exhibition container. Each of the biographies is going to be read by a group member at Lublin Housing Cooperative. The voice of the reader is going to be transmitted to the exhibition room arranged in one of the premises of Wileńska Market. There, another member of the group is going to change the biography again into text – preserving it manually on a special two-centimetre-wide tape, one after the other.

Write your biography and:

  • leave it at Galeria Labirynt (ul. Popiełuszki 5) or in a temporary exhibition space at Wileńska Market (from 20th January till 7th February, Monday-Saturday, 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.),
  • or send it via email to open.group@ukr.net, please enter BIOGRAPHY in the subject of the message,
  • or send it via Facebook @opengroupart.

Biographies can be signed / anonymous, short / long.

Your biography is going to be used as a part of the work and you are going to become a member of Open Group.

Open Group is one of the most interesting artistic collectives operating currently in Ukraine. It has existed since 2012. Currently, it consists of Yuriy Biley, Anton Varga and Pavlo Kovach. After only three years of activity, the group marked its presence with a strong accent, which was the 2015 Grand Prix of the PinchukArtCentre competition – the most important prize awarded to young artists in Ukraine. In the same year, Open Group was invited to participate in the International Art Exhibition in Venice, and in 2019 it was the curator of the Ukrainian National Pavilion at the 58th edition of the Exhibition.
