Ryszard Kasperowicz – Descartes and ‘Fine’ Arts

Philosophical and scientific achievements of Descartes are among the biggest attainments of  modern culture. This great French thinker suggested a model of philosophy that allows to call him one of the co-authors of spiritual breakthrough that took place in the second half of the 17th century. Descartes also greatly influenced the way we understand beauty, perform aesthetics and comprehend the role of art in the context of its cultural position. Although art was not the main field of Descartes’ interest, ideas of this outstanding philosopher shall be perceived as revolutionary also according to their status in a whole complex configuration of humanistic tradition and natural science in the 17th and 18th centuries.
