Exhibition of Wojciech Ireneusz Sobczyk is a part of site-specific cycle presented in 2019 in Galeria Labirynt 2. The artist was inspired by pre-and post-war history of residents of the tenement house where the gallery is located now. According to register from the early 1941 there were twenty-four apartments and two stores in the building. The condition of the tenement house was not good, and it gradually deteriorated over the years of war. There were 79 people of Jewish origin living in the here. The post-war list of residents with surnames of Polish origin only leaves no doubt as to what changes have taken place and what caused them.
The artist’s attempt to commemorate the past was reflected in installation prepared especially for the gallery space. Two parts of the gallery are designed to stand in contrast to each other. A bright pure room, which may resemble a laboratory, refers to scientifically dehumanised eugenic theories from the beginning of the 20th century. The first room becomes a vestibule of the second one. The work presented there refers to problem raised in the title of the exhibition. Sobczyk carefully tracks the traces of history and transforms them into ambiguous thought-provoking works.

Wojciech Ireneusz Sobczyk (born 1985) – lives and works in Krakow. Studied graphic art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. He holds an adjunct position at the Pedagogical University in Krakow. In his artworks, he creates sculptures, installation, animation, music and graphic illustration. His interests are focused on a broadly understood concept of humanism, while his artistic practice draws from traditional, oftentimes even archaic, techniques, topics and iconographies. Sobczyk reaches back to the fundamental questions on the nature of Mankind, the existence of Good and Evil, the essence of Beauty and Art. His isn’t, however, a strictly elementary return to the ideas and craft of a Renaissance artist. Sobczyk’s affinities amid the values of the humanities take on a characteristically material dimension.
