SONIA LEBER & DAVID CHESWORTH

Zaum Tractor by David Chesworth (born 1958 in Stoke-on-Trent, UK, lives and works in Melbourne) and Sonia Leber (born 1959, lives and works in Melbourne) is a suggestive depiction of post-Soviet Russia, including fragments from archival recordings with propaganda images of Soviet modernization, interwoven with recordings of drills by Cossack cadets, games, and a concert on Orthodox church bells. The work is supplemented by recitals of poetry in the abstract language Zaum created by Russian futurist Aleksei Kruchenykh (1886–1968)—phrases in a “beyonsense” language.
