A characteristic feature of most of these drawings is the symbolism of Russian military aggression—particularly the “Z” and “V” symbols that the Russian army has used to mark military equipment since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. These drawings are contrasted with documentary photographs from Magnum agency that record the reality of the Russo-Ukrainian war and confront the viewer with the real, often devastating consequences of military confrontation. The interaction between these two media underlines the gulf between naïve imagination and brutal reality, between propaganda and truth. The book was produced in collaboration with Magnum Photos as part of the Beyond the Silence project in 2024.

In the work Imagine that… (2025) the artist appeals to the imagination and invites the viewer to reflect on art from the perspective of the war’s impact on the lives of 20th-century artists. Imagine how art history and culture at large would look without the key works and fundamental ideas of artists who might have been killed by war or, conversely, who survived and continued their practice.

Sasha Kurmaz, ‘The Lesson of Propaganda’, 2025, book, photo by Wojciech Radzki

Sasha Kurmaz, ‘Imagine if…’, 2025, video with sound, 9′45″

Sasha Kurmaz ‘Imagine if…’, 2025, video with sound, 9′45″‘The Lesson of Propaganda’, 2025, book In the publication Lessons of Propaganda (2024) the artist juxtaposes drawings created by teenagers for the exhibition Heroes of Russia and Donbas, which took place in Russia in 2022.
