“May”, 2015
video, 07’06’’

Robert Kuśmirowski is the author of installations, objects, drawings, and photographs. In his works he is primarily interested in matter and its properties. He is inspired by time-bitten found objects or even fragments of them. Kuśmirowski uses them for his works or creates their dummies with extraordinary accuracy, deluding the recipient’s eye and playing with illusion as well as with reality.
“May” work was carried out at the former concentration camp in Lublin. Scenes from this place of memorial and Nazi crime are accompanied by the artist’s statement which is a reflection on “place after the plague”, on death and transience, on what remains after people and “human masses”. On the video there are barracks walls, gas chambers, fragments of installations, accumulated objects that, being a trace of the crime, are at the same time just ordinary matter subjected to work of time. The aesthetics of this matter is clearly emphasised in the video. In our minds it is inevitably combined with word “ethics”. The title of Kuśmirowski’s work refers to the time when the video was made and emphasises the contrast between the nature of the place and the outside world – awakened nature.
