KADER ATTIA

The sculptures from the series Culture, Another Nature Repaired by Kader Attia (born in 1970 in Dugny, near Paris, lives and works in Berlin and Paris) are linked with the concept of “reappropriation” and the influence exerted on modernism by vernacular architecture, military technology, and surgery. The works were created in cooperation with traditional craftsmen from Bamako, Mali. They were inspired by photos of les gueules cassées, soldiers disfigured during the First World War. They become totems, African idols recalling the dark colonial chapters of European history.
