“In our film ‘Civilians. Invasion” (2023) we used a familiar method of searching for material using social media search algorithms. We collected archival open-source footage recorded by civilians during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Searching for material by city and town names and keywords such as ‘shelling,’ ‘burial,’ etc., we looked at several thousand recordings. As the full-scale invasion began, the content on the usual private accounts changed: staying in basements, evacuating from occupied areas, trying to survive. On some of these channels, the last recordings were posted in March-April 2023 and were no longer updated. The fate of the authors of these channels remains unknown.

In 2024, our film “Civilians. Invasion” represented Ukraine at the 60th Venice Biennale.

This project contains sensitive content that some people may find disturbing.”
