O wystawie

Mixed emotions and contradicting desires – fear mingled with lust, hope tangled with sorrow – they become a starting point for Kacper Tomaszewski’s reflection on tears as catalyst for survival.Tears? Fleeting drops of chaos, which come from depths of us, stream down the face as if they’re a material save of emotions.

Jack Katz, author of the books: “How Emotions Work”, believes that crying – even if common – stays shockingly unfathomable. This inspires Tomaszewski, who with his new works looks at how people tame this uncontrollable act. Tears become for him the key to understanding inner conflicts and contrasting emotions on a daily basis.

Gaining inspiration from personal experiences of working through grief, and borrowing the exhibition’s title from a song by Lana Del Rey, the artist views tears as magical streams. Spontaneous and beyond control, they resemble a primordial ritual of nature. Transparent, almost invisible, yet radiant—when juxtaposed with raw steel; cold, hard, unyielding, as used in the latest works—they gain new meaning. They become a symbol of tension and release, delicacy and strength, fragility and resilience. As Lana puts it: “Because I’m pretty when I cry.”

The exhibition features drawings made with black, silver, and purple pencil. Purple, a symbol of magic and spirituality, adds an additional dimension to the tears. The pop culture quotes that appear in the works represent an attempt to tame sorrow and difficult emotions, which are an inseparable part of our experience. Alongside the drawings are steel plates with engravings, functioning like mirrors—they reflect both emotions and return on how we express them in public space. In these works, Tomaszewski asks where privacy ends and the need to share our tears with others begins.

The exhibition also includes an installation built from heavy, organic forms inspired by stones, and cold steel, interwoven into a single structure. It is a fountain of emotion, echoing the words of Ovid: Hades is full of tears.

The exhibition is accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Staś Czekalski.

‘Voices From Ukraine’ is an exhibition that presents the crises of the contemporary world from the perspective of a country defending itself against neo-imperial Russian military aggression. Artists from Ukraine draw attention to various aspects of this reality—from personal experiences of war to the broader context of threats to democracy, freedom, and the environment.

The exhibition explores how the war impacts everyday life and imagination—not only for those directly experiencing it, but for all of us who live in its shadow. Although the war in Ukraine has been ongoing for eleven years, and the full-scale invasion for over three, it still feels distant to many people living outside the country. Yet what is happening today beyond the eastern border concerns the future of us all—a future in which democracy, peace, and freedom are no longer taken for granted.

In the face of the growing influence of authoritarian regimes, art becomes a space for reflection and action. It helps us imagine different scenarios—a future that can still be changed. The artists participating in the exhibition give voice to their experiences, fears, and hopes, showing that imagination can be a form of resistance.

It is not only a story about war, but above all, about responsibility—for the world we have and the one we are still creating.

The exhibition in Lublin is the main part of the ‘Voices From Ukraine’ project. It is accompanied by two other exhibitions: ‘Voices From Ukraine. Borderlands’ at BWA Zielona Góra (from 5 September), which focuses on the motif of the border—physical and mental—as an existential and geopolitical metaphor; and ‘Voices From Ukraine. Landscapes’ at BWA Wrocław (from 26 September), which reflects on the impact of the war on nature, space, and collective identity. Together, they create a palimpsest of works created at a special moment in history, prompting reflection on what the future might look like.

      O wystawie

Kali Katharsis’ work is a continuous story about human’s life condition. Linking to mythology, science, changing the meaning of iconography of arts, she creates the world, in the centre center of which there is human being, quite often a man. However, this is not a representative of a strong, patriarchal society. This is a person who does not hide their emotions, often naked, defenseless.

The exhibition includes works that depict carnality in various forms, which may not be suitable for sensitive viewers. Recommended age for visitors 18+.

“You’ve Got No Shame” presents a wide creative range – from ink, charcoal, and pencil drawings to painting and printmaking. Among the subtle nude pictures and portraits, including those of her former partner, friend, and mentor Dawid Hemke (Mr. Ophelion), the artist also shares a personal narrative of exploring her sexuality, gender identity, and place within the queer community. The artist proudly shows that she is not ashamed of her experiences, which she captures on paper, creating her own “Never Ending Story,” where the world of fantasy meets real life.
